Bees and ESG

MIËLO honey and the other products from the MIËLO oases embody our efforts to create habitats for insects by eliminating pesticides and creating flowering biotopes. By purchasing our delicious honey products, companies not only promote biodiversity, but also integrate valuable sustainability into the environmental aspect of their ESG strategy. Read here why supporting the MIËLO project has a positive image transfer effect on your company and goes beyond simply setting up bee colonies on the roof of your office building.

Why are bee projects so popular in corporate communications?

Bees, as social creatures, are often cited as a model for human cooperation due to their organization. The organized structure, collective work, and clear division of tasks among bees demonstrate that cooperation is key to success. The bee colony, in which each bee makes an important contribution, underscores the importance of teamwork and coordinated efforts. Efficient cooperation promotes mutual success and enables sustainable development. This, combined with the positive image of honeybees and the conviction that protecting them contributes to “saving the world,” makes them perfect role models in many respects in a corporate context.

Why not just put beehives on the roof or in the parking lot?

We believe that any initiative that promotes discussion of the topic of “how we treat our environment” is worthwhile. Setting up honeybee colonies signals a commitment to the environment, but focuses only on the symptom of insect decline, not its cause. Effective nature conservation requires the creation of unspoiled habitats for all insects and insect-eating animals. We must not forget that, in addition to honey bees, there are around 700 other pollinators in Austria that are just as vital. The comparison is similar to that between domestic chickens and wild birds: a chicken coop in the garden does nothing for the habitat of wild birds. Our efforts should therefore focus on changing the habitat, because bee colonies on rooftops alone are not enough to ensure the survival of all pollinators.

ESG projects are often perceived as “greenwashing.” Why is MIËLO different?

The MIËLO project is not just about the beehive on the roof, not just about combating symptoms. We are implementing real change – agricultural land is being freed from pesticides, thousands of trees and shrubs, as well as former fields and meadows, are being transformed into new, flowering habitats not only for honey bees but for all 700 species of pollinating insects that (still) exist in Austria. Not to mention the many birds and mammals that depend on insects for food. MIËLO is more than a drop in the ocean; it is the beginning of sustainable change.

Couldn't I create an oasis myself and plant trees myself?

Planting trees without the MIËLO overall concept involving bees and honey remains incomplete: MIËLO is perceived extremely positively because it tells a true story and evokes memories from our youth. Green meadows, buzzing bees, unspoiled nature, and farm vacations. Memories of our grandmother in Hütteldorf handing us our first sausage sandwich. Arriving in the Salzkammergut and riding the Postbus. The wonder of Austria’s mountains and lakes. Our social media presence clearly shows this: around 6,000 followers and exclusively positive vibes. MIËLO is a “love brand” with a high identification value. The positive image transfer to the brands of the supporters is already creating considerable added value.
